James Goes 4-4 in Loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- Carson-Newman scored two runs apiece in the sixth and eighth innings to defeat the Bloomsburg Huskies, 5-1 in the first of a three-game series.

Carson-Newman took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning before the Huskies tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth.

Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion) and Vinnie James (Bristol/Bristol) opened the innings with back-to-back singles. Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner) then followed with a single to left scoring Robinson with the tying run. Matt Allen (DuBoistown/South Williamsport) then put down a sacrifice bunt with James and Ward each moving up a base. However, the next two batters were retired ending the threat.

C-N (15-7) broke the tie with a pair of runs in the sixth and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Huskies put two runners on in the top of the ninth, but could not score.

Bloomsburg's Dustin Johnson (Sunbury/Shikellamy) took the loss after giving up eight hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Bloomsburg was led by James who went 4-4 in the game. Cory McGinnis led Carson-Newman at the plate, going 3-for-4.

The Eagles and Huskies conclude their series with a Sunday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
